A tube heat exchanger is a device used to exchange heat between two media. It consists of a shell with a tube bundle inside. The tube bundle inside the heat exchanger can be straight or spiral. Most often, the heat transfer medium passes through the tube bundle and the heat receiving medium through the shell. Due to the various types of designs and a wide range of sizes, shell-and-tube heat exchangers are widely used in industry and utilities today.
Tube-and-pipe heat exchangers were invented at the beginning of the last century to meet the needs of thermal power plants for steam condensation and water heating (condensers and water heaters operating at high pressure). Shell and tube heat exchangers are used as steam condensers, heaters, coolers and evaporators. Over time, their design has been refined and improved, becoming less bulky and easier to disassemble and clean. Improvements in design led to widespread industrial use of tube heat exchangers in the oil industry. To operate in harsh environments, heaters and coolers were required for different fractions of crude oil and associated organic liquids. The heat exchangers often had to handle contaminated fluids at high temperatures and pressures, and therefore had to be designed to be easy to repair and clean. A tube heat exchanger is a device that exchanges heat between two media. It consists of a casing in which a bundle of pipes is placed. The tube bundle inside the heat exchanger can be straight or spiral. Most often, the heat transfer medium passes through the tube bundle and the heat receiving medium through the shell. Due to the various types of designs and the wide range of sizes, shell-and-tube heat exchangers are widely used in industry and utilities today.
Over the years, tube heat exchangers have become the most widely used type of device. This is primarily due to the reliability of their design and a wide range of versions for different operating conditions, among other things:
- Single-phase flows, boiling and condensation on the hot and cold sides of the heat exchanger with vertical or horizontal design;
- pressure range from vacuum to high values;
- pressure drops on both sides that vary widely due to the wide variety of options;
- meeting the thermal stress requirements without significantly increasing the cost of the apparatus; wide range of pressure drops on both sides due to the wide variety of options;
- sizes from small to extremely large (5000 m2);
- the possibility of using various materials in accordance with the requirements for cost, corrosion, temperature and pressure; sizes from small to extremely large (5000 m2);
- use of advanced heat transfer surfaces both inside and outside the pipes;
- the ability to remove the pipe bundle for cleaning and repair.
