Design Features of FUNKE Heat Exchangers

The Funke FP heat exchanger surpasses similar plate heat exchangers (PHEs) in its characteristics thanks to the implementation of an innovative plate design with the use of asymmetric channels. Additionally, the level of hydraulic losses during operation with such materials as water, gas, steam, and salt solutions is significantly reduced.

The dismountable Funke heat exchanger consists of two plates: a main plate and a pressure plate. Between them, there is a package of heat transfer plates with rubber seals, forming channels for the media flow. The media usually flow in a counter-current direction.

Plate Material for FUNKE

FUNKE heat exchange plates are typically made from stainless steel 1.4404 /AISI 316L. Compared to stainless steel 1.4301 /AISI 304, this type of steel offers more reliable protection against corrosion and damage caused by chlorides due to its molybdenum content.

The following materials are also used for manufacturing plates:

  • 1.4301 /AISI 304 (an economical solution for non-critical media)
  • 1.4539 /AISI 904L (the high nickel content provides this steel with high resistance to stress corrosion cracking, and the presence of copper in the alloy improves resistance to acids)
  • 1.4547 / 254 SMO (compared to 1.4404 /AISI 316L, this material is more resistant to acids and chlorides)
  • Alloy C276 (distinguished by its high resistance to acids and chlorides, used with concentrated sulfuric acid)

Sealing Material for FUNKE

Funke heat exchangers come with either adhesive seals or clip-on (glue-free with a clamping system on the plate) made of the following materials:

  • NBR (Nitrile Rubber): A versatile material for aqueous and oily media, such as water/oil.
  • EPDM (Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer Rubber): Widely used for numerous chemical compounds that do not contain mineral oils and fats; also for water/steam applications.
  • Viton (Fluoro Rubber) offers very high resistance to chemicals and organic solvents, as well as to sulfuric acid and vegetable oils at high temperatures.
  • Other sealing materials available upon request.

  • FPDW – high-reliability double-wall plate heat exchanger. “One” plate of the heat exchanger consists of two plates lying on top of each other. The space between these plates forms a leakage channel. In case of damage to one of the plates, for example, due to corrosion by aggressive media, the medium exits through this leakage channel to the outside.
