The selection of heat exchanger components

To properly select the components for an existing plate heat exchanger, you need to answer some questions:

  1. Manufacturer of plates

The main manufacturers of plates in the world include companies such as:  (Alfa Laval),  (Sondex),  (Funke),  (Kelvion, GEA),  (Tranter). Plates from each manufacturer differ from each other in terms of dimensions, vertical and horizontal center distances, plate thickness, configuration, and geometry of the gasket groove. This fact indicates that replacing plates from one manufacturer with those from another in a heat exchanger is not possible.

  1. Plate material.

The materials of heat exchanger plates can include: AISI 316, AISI 304, SMO 254, ALLOY-276, TITAN, etc. If you know the material of the plates, that’s good. If the material of the plates is unknown, the following recommendations can help determine it. In domestic hot water and heating systems, water treatment is desirable. The most optimal material for plates is stainless steel AISI 316 (marked as 1.4404 in Germany, and as 03Х17Н14М3 in our country). It contains a sufficient amount of nickel (13%) and chromium (17%) to resist corrosion. However, it is important to remember that chloride content exceeding 250 mg/l has a detrimental effect even on this steel.

  1. Gasket material.

The choice of gasket material depends on the operating conditions of the heat exchanger, which need to be taken into account when ordering. Gasket materials commonly used in plate heat exchangers include EPDM, NBR, and VITON. For modern hot water and heating systems, EPDM gaskets with thermal resistance are used. For environments containing various oils, as well as petroleum processing products, NBR gaskets resistant to petroleum oils are used. VITON gaskets can be used for aggressive environments (such as H2SO4) as well as for high temperatures (up to 195°C).

   4. The fastening of gaskets in the heat exchanger

The gaskets (seals) of the heat exchanger are placed in special grooves on the plates. In removable plate heat exchangers two types of gasket fastening are used:

  • adhesive;
  • clip-on.

Clip-on fastening is preferable as it allows for the fastest replacement of gaskets. When replacing old adhesive gaskets, the plate must first be treated with a special compound to remove the adhesive, and then the gasket installation is performed.
