What is an oil cooler and why is it needed

An oil cooler is a heat-exchange device designed to maintain oil temperature within an optimal range. The operating principle is simple: hot oil passes through the oil cooler–heat exchanger, where it transfers heat to air or water. At the same time, the pressure in the system does not drop and the equipment performance is preserved.

Oil cooling is critical for any industrial installation. When overheated, the oil loses viscosity — lubrication efficiency decreases, bearing and pump wear increases, and the risk of scuffing and component failure grows. In hydraulic systems, a temperature increase of 10 °C above the norm can shorten the service life of the equipment by almost one third.

Types of oil coolers

There are several structural types of oil coolers that differ in cooling principle and field of application.

By cooling principle

Air oil cooler is the simplest and most common solution. Air is supplied by a fan through an aluminium radiator, removing heat from the oil flow.

Advantages:

  • independent of water supply;
  • easy installation;
  • low cost of the oil cooler.

Disadvantages:

  • reduced efficiency in hot climates;
  • fan noise;
  • need to clean the radiator fins.

Such an oil cooler for hydraulics is installed on mobile machines, presses, metal-cutting machine tools and hydraulic power units where autonomy is required.

A water oil cooler or oil cooler heat exchanger operates on the counterflow principle – oil and water move towards each other, providing efficient heat exchange.

Advantages:

  • high heat transfer;
  • stable operation under heavy loads;
  • compact design.

Disadvantages:

  • requires clean technical water;
  • risk of corrosion if the fluid quality is poor.

Water oil coolers are used in turbines, compressors, diesel engines and generators. The designs comply with ISO 15547-1, which regulates the parameters of industrial heat exchangers.

In complex systems, combined oil coolers that integrate air and water cooling are used. There are also oil cooler heat exchangers with electronic flow control for precise temperature regulation – such models are used in power engineering and heavy machinery.

    The calculation is based on the thermal power of the system, the required temperatures, and the permissible pressure drop.
