Design and principle of operation of brazed plate heat exchanger
The brazed plate heat exchanger belongs to the surface heat exchangers, where heat transfer between media occurs without mixing through separating surfaces – solid walls. The main element of the brazed plate heat exchanger is corrugated plates made of thin stainless steel sheets. The plates are brazed together using copper or nickel solder in a vacuum furnace. Solder – a thin (foil-like) sheet of nickel or copper (similar in size to the heat exchanger plate) is placed between each plate. During the assembly of the plate pack (before soldering in the furnace), each subsequent plate is rotated by 180° relative to the previous one.The solder melts in the vacuum furnace, forming a strong bond throughout the plate pack. As a result, channels are formed inside the brazed heat exchanger, through which the participating media will alternately flow for heat exchange.
The movement of media usually occurs in counterflow, i.e., towards each other. The brazed plate heat exchanger can operate at temperatures ranging from -195°C to +230°C and pressures up to 4.5 MPa. As a result, the brazed plate heat exchanger is used in heating systems, chemical production, refrigeration equipment, as well as in technological processes with high temperatures and pressures.
The corrugated surfaces of the plates in the brazed plate heat exchanger have high characteristics that promote significant flow turbulence, which determines high heat transfer efficiency even at low flow rates inside the heat exchanger channels. The turbulent flow of fluids leads to a self-cleaning effect of the plates inside the brazed heat exchanger.
The principle of operation of the brazed plate heat exchanger is similar to that of the gasketed plate heat exchanger. To achieve counterflow, it is necessary to direct the fluids into different ports relative to the horizontal axis of the heat exchanger. For example, if we direct the cooled fluid into the upper right port of the heat exchanger, then the heated fluid should enter the lower left port.
When using the brazed plate heat exchanger as a steam heater, it is necessary to introduce steam into any upper port. When using the brazed plate heat exchanger as a refrigerant evaporator, it is necessary to introduce the liquid refrigerant into the lower port of the heat exchanger.
The brazed plate heat exchanger is cost-effective because its construction is based on heat transfer plates. It does not include expensive pressure plates like in the gasketed plate heat exchanger.
The brazed plate heat exchanger is non-disassemblable, therefore cleaning of the heat exchange surfaces is carried out solely through chemical flushing.
The connections in the brazed plate heat exchanger can be threaded (1″, 1 ¼”, 2″), soldered, and flanged connections for diameters DN50, DN80, and DN100.
